A newborn baby boy, wrapped in blankets and placed in a cardboard box, was found early morning on Saturday at the entrance of a cafeteria in Helwan area in Sharjah.

Police said the fair complexioned baby, apparently aged two days, was found by a worker of the cafeteria. He found the baby at closing time.

Police said though the baby was shielded from the rain, he was very cold.

Anjad patrols rushed to the cafeteria and took the infant to Al Qasimi Hospital
for medical attention. “He will be kept at the hospital until his parents are found, or will be transferred to the social services department,” police said.

Officials at Al Qasimi Hospital said the baby is in good health and will be handed over when the authorities concerned refer them to the social welfare department.

Afaf Al Meri, Director-General of Social Welfare in Sharjah, said abandoned children are provided care at the Dar Al Aman shelter of his department.

The Children’s Welfare Committee, formed recently to attend to those abandoned and denied of rights, will study the applications for adoptions and select adoptive parents on the basis of their social and economic conditions.

Till these formalities are complete, the children will remain in the shelter.
