Police said the corpse of the 35-year old man was found 21 miles from the shore by the fisherman who alerted the authorities.

The body of an Algerian, who was missing off the UAE coast for 11 days, was found floating in regional waters by a fisherman, the Dubai Police said on Saturday. The partly decomposed body of Adel Ait Ghezala, a PhD student from the American University in Washington, who went spear-fishing and diving with his friends, has been referred to forensic experts to determine the cause of death after his family identified his remains from the clothes he was wearing.

Police said the corpse of the 35-year old man was found 21 miles from the shore by the fisherman who alerted the authorities.

‘‘The fisherman informed the police of a body floating in the water. Five boats of Dubai Police and the Coast Guard rushed to the site to lift the corpse out of the water and transport it to port where family members and friends recognised the clothes he wore and identified other marks on his body,’’ said Ali Abdulla Al Naqbi, Director Maritime Rescue, Dubai Police .

The victim and other friends went diving on New Year’s day. Three of them returned soon after, but Adel and another friend swam further into the water. When his friend came up for oxygen, he realised Adel had vanished.

The Dubai Police said the body would be handed over to the family after completion of legal and administrative procedures.
