Latest deaths intensify calls for pedestrian bridge on Al Ittihad Road

Sharjah: Two women pedestrians were struck down and killed by vehicles in separate incidents in Sharjah on Thursday, authorities said.

All the victims were reportedly crossing a busy highway when the incidents took place.
On Thursday night, a woman in her 20s became the latest person to be run over on Al Ittihad Road (the Dubai–Sharjah highway), a dangerous road routinely crossed by pedestrians who risk their life for a little convenience.

The woman was hit by a car that was heading from Dubai towards Sharjah, said a Sharjah Police official. The accident happened around 9pm and caused massive traffic jams.

The woman, who carried no identification, was killed instantly as she was crossing towards the Al Taawun area. Her body was transferred to Al Kuwaiti hospital.

In a separate incident, an Uzbek woman was run over by a car while crossing from an undesignated area on Al Ittihad Road. She was alive when taken to Al Kuwaiti hospital but succumbed to her injuries.

The motorists who caused the accidents were questioned at Al Buhairah Police station.

Residents have long been demanding for a pedestrian bridge on the highway, with a speed limit of 100km/h, as numerous pedestrians have been struck by cars in front of Ansar Mall and Safeer Mall over the years.
