Many people, who have indulged in unauthorised fishing in the emirate, have been fined between Dh100 and Dh500, reported officials at the Dubai Municipality.

“Hundreds of people flock in to various beaches and creek and mindlessly ‘comb in’ marine creatures during the night,” said Khalid Suletine, head of environment emergency office at Dubai Municipality environment department.

He announced that many have been punished for this.

“They mainly target areas like Maktoum bridge, Mamzar open beach, Jumeirah beach, Jebel Ali beach and Creek Park. Fishing adversely affects the marine wealth.”

According to him, violators included different nationalities, but Asians were a majority.

He added that a team of inspectors conduct daily patrols to book any violators.

This, he stated, is part of Dubai Municipality’ efforts to protect the marine environment.
