Father did not see son when he jumped out of vehicle’s boot

Tragedy struck hard at an Emirati family in Dibba Fujairah on Wednesday, when a man accidentally killed his five-year-old son by crushing his little body with his car without noticing him, a newspaper reported on Thursday.

It was the second such an accident in the eastern UAE town in just two months after a 2.5-year-old Emirati boy was run over by his father’s vehicle in June.

Wednesday’s accident took place just before Iftar (Ramadan evening meal) when the father returned home and his son Rashid jumped out of the car boot, Dubai-based Arabic language daily Al Bayan said.

But the boy sneaked back under the boot after his shoe slipped out of his foot. As the father reversed back to park the car, he ran over his son without noticing him.

Feeling he hit something, the shocked father jumped out of the car, picked his son, who was still alive, and rushed him to hospital but the boy died just before arrival.

“It was the second such an accident in the same town in two months…an Emirati man accidentally overran his 2.5-year-old son with his car in Rafaa area in the city last month,” said Major Saif Al Zahmi, chief of Dibba police.
