Sharjah: An 11-year-old Iraqi girl died on Monday morning two days after being admitted to hospital with suspected food poisoning. Doctors now suspect pesticide poisoning may have caused her death.

Maha Ebrahim was admitted to hospital along with her six-year-old brother and mother complaining of vomiting and stomach pains. They told hospital staff they felt ill after eating a home-cooked meal.

The mother, Dr Hind Esmail, who works at Al Qasimi Hospital, is still in a coma while her six-year-old son Mohammad has been transferred to Khalifa Hospital due to his worsening condition.

Abdul Wahid Al Wahidi, head of the surgical department at Al Qasimi Hospital, said investigations revealed food poisoning was not behind the tragedy as initially thought.

The girl’s father, Ebrahim, an engineer in his fifties, his 18-year-old son and the family’s maid were not affected.

A tearful Ebrahim told  that one of his neighbours was using pesticides and that people in two other apartments were affected.

After visiting Al Qasimi Hospital on Friday the Iraqi family members were discharged but were admitted the next day when their conditions had not improved.

Maha’s body has been transferred to the forensic laboratory for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
An investigation is underway.
