Dubai Police caught a lorry driver who was trying to smuggle 5.5kg of heroin out of the country.

The anti-narcotics department arrested the Asian man, identified as SM, on August 26 after searching his apartment and a lorry in Al Awir, where they found heroin worth Dhs3 million. Officers said the heroin was hidden in a compartment in the backseat of the lorry.

Colonel Eid Al Thani, director of anti-narcotics, said: “We found three bags, one containing 2.2kg of heroin, another containing 2kg, and a third containing 464g, plus a carton containing 814g.”

The 20-year-old Asian driver, who is married and works for a transportation company used his job to smuggle drugs in and out of the UAE, police said.

“He claimed that he was ordered by an Asian man living abroad to receive the drugs from people he doesn’t know,” Al Thani said. “They managed to smuggle drugs in pills to store them before smuggling them out of the country.”

The suspect admitted smuggling the drugs during questioning and said he sometimes sold heroin himself.

The driver has been referred to Dubai Public Prosecution to finish the investigation after being charged with possessing and smuggling heroin.
