JEDDAH: Police have arrested seven people for using social media to sell drugs, the Interior Ministry has announced.

Abdulilah Al-Sharif, assistant director general of the ministry’s narcotics division, said three were using Twitter and four Snapchat, according to a report in a local publication.

Al-Sharif said the National Project for the Prevention of Narcotics (Nibras) was one of the most important awareness programs in the country because it targeted schoolchildren and families on the dangers of drug abuse.

In a briefing of journalists, he said members of the project were working with families dealing with children and relatives who are drug addicts, including providing them beds in conjunction with Al-Amal hospitals.

Al-Sharif said the project would continue for five years throughout the Kingdom and later expanded internationally with awareness programs on social media.
