20 students and three teachers rescued by Oman Air Force helicopter

Muscat: Twenty students and three teachers were rescued by the Oman Air Force helicopter after they were trapped in wadi Hunai of Rustaq province on Wednesday due to heavy rain.

Another person was rescued by the personnel of the Public Authority for Civil Defense and Ambulance (PACDA) after he was trapped in wadi Huqain of Rustaq.

The northern provinces of Ibri, Rustaq, Bahla, Nakhal and Nizwa witnessed heavy rain, thunderstorms and hail on Wednesday morning.

The heavy rain resulted in flash floods in Ibri and Rustaq provinces, which entered houses and farms and caused some properties damage.

Moreover, the flooded wadis caused traffic snarls in Ibri and Rustaq.

No fatalities have been reported so far, according to the PACDA.

Royal Oman Police denied local media reports that one person was killed by lightning strike in Rustaq, pointing out that the death was natural and had nothing to do with the rain.

Furthermore, schools remained closed in Ibri province during the heavy rain, according to the Ministry of Education.

Photos of children who climbed a mountain, to get to higher ground to escape from the flooded wadi Rustaq went viral on social media, with Omanis demanding that authorities close schools in such weather conditions.

Meanwhile, the Public Authority for Civil Aviation issued a warning statement of heavy rain, thunderstorm, hailstorms and strong winds in the northern parts of Oman.

Muscat, South and North Batinah, Buraimi, Dahira, Dahkiliyah and North Sharqiyah governorates will witness heavy rain on Wednesday and Thursday.

The authority advised everyone to not cross wadis and to avoid low-laying areas as well as follow weather bulletins.

Seven were killed and ten injured on March 9 and 10, due to the heavy rain that lashed Oman.
