Huge haul of narcotics seized from Oman

Oman DrugsMuscat: Officials from the Directorate of Narcotic Control have seized a huge haul of narcotics from an Asian in Dibba, about 270km north of Muscat, according to a Royal Oman Police (ROP) press release on Monday.

“When the officers arrested the accused he had in his possession 8,525 tablets of tramadol,” a spokesman for the ROP said. Tramadol is a narcotic-like pain reliever, often used by addicts.

He added that police also found six packets of black hashish from the accused. He appealed to all residents to cooperate with the police to combat the scourge of drugs in the country. “We urge people to contact us on (9999) or (1444) if they suspect any drug related activities in their area,” he said.

In the capital Muscat, Ruwi police station officers apprehended four Asians on the charges of kidnapping. “The accused had kidnapped two of their compatriots and demanded 1,000 Omani riyals for their release,” the police spokesman said, adding that the victim’s kin had informed the police about the kidnap.

“Our investigations led to us to the house where the victims were held captive by the accused,” he said, adding that two of the accused were caught outside the house while two others were keeping guard on kidnap victims inside the house. “The accused have been referred to the public prosecution for further action,” he pointed out.

In another case in North Batinah region, the police arrested an Asian for forging resident cards. The accused was arrested with all the paraphernalia used to forge resident cards from a remote area in Sohar, about 231km north of Muscat.

“The accused was making forged resident cards for illegal residents, including absconders in Oman,” the police spokesman revealed.

Meanwhile, the crackdown against illegal expatriate residents continues with the arrests of 103 and deportation of 490 i during last week, according to a ROP press release.
