One of his daughters is in hospital after being flung from the window

Sana’a: A Yemeni man jumped to his death from a five-storey building shortly after flinging his two daughters from the window in the Yemeni capital.

The official news agency reported on Thursday that Abdul Raouf Al Gabati grabbed his two daughters and threw them one by one from the window of his flat in the Maen district in the capital.

His younger daughter Sara, 10, died on the scene and his other daughter Shima is still battling for life in the intensive care unit of one of the capital’s private hospitals.

Family problems

The man instantly followed his daughters and was pronounced dead on the spot. A local official told the agency that full investigation is under way but initial investigation showed that the man was psychologically ill and his condition worsened when he fell into accumulated debt coupled with family problems.

Local media sources said that the man was dismissed from his job in a commercial bank and lives with his daughters after divorcing their mother.

Yemen’s ministry of interior recorded hundreds of suicide cases across the country in the last three years. The ministry recently said that 253 Yemenis committed suicide in 2012. In 2011, 235 people, including 24 children, committed suicide, and 292 in 2010.

The ministry said that Yemenis usually commit suicide to escape family disputes, poverty and psychological problems.
