Mumbai: Sanjay Dutt has given us numerous hit films but when the actor’s career was going through a dull phase, it was Rajkumar Hirani who came to his rescue. The actor’s portrayal of Munna Bhai got him maximum applause from fans worldwide.
After the success of ‘Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.’, Raju made ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’ (2006), which again became a superhit. Both films left a huge impact on people that Sanjay was often referred as ‘Munna Bhai’ by his fans.
Sanjay Dutt was adored for his portrayal as Munna Bhai in the film.
Since both the films did well at the box office and were applauded by the critics, the news of a third film in the franchise didn’t come as a surprise. Around 2010, Rajukumar Hirani announced the third film in the Munna Bhai franchise, titled as ‘Munna Bhai Chale America’.
Even though at that time the makers were still working on the film’s script, the director shot a hilarious trailer with Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi.
In the trailer, which was released in the year 2010, we see Sanjay aka Munna Bhai gearing up for his visit to America with Circuit (Arshad Warsi) by his side.
The actor carried forward his role as Munna Bhai in franchise’s second film where he followed the path of Gandhigiri.
After ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’, in 2007, Sanjay Dutt was found guilty of illegal possession of an AK-56 rifle and a pistol in arms case related to 1993 Mumbai Serial Blasts and was sentenced to six years in jail. After serving 18 months, the actor was out on bail, but in 2013, Sanjay was ordered back to jail in Pune by a court.
During the period Sanjay was running in and out of jail, the actor managed to finish up some of his work. However, he couldn’t start shooting for ‘Munna Bhai Chale America’.
In the last few years, Rajukumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra stood their ground and made it clear that the third film in the franchise was still at play. Even Sanjay’s co-star Arshad confirmed reports last year by saying that the script of ‘Munna Bhai 3’ is ready and the makers are only waiting for Sanjay to walk out of the jail as a free man.
“Yes, ‘Munna Bhai 3’ will be made for sure. There is no doubt about that. The script is almost ready and we are waiting for him to come back and relax and then we will start working on it,” Arshad Warsi was quoted saying.
Now that Sanjay is a free man, what’s happening with ‘Munna Bhai Chale America’?
Reportedly, the film’s been scrapped but that doesn’t mean that the fans can’t expect another film in the franchise. Reportedly, the makers are currently working on a new script for the third film in ‘Munna Bhai M.B.S.S.’ franchise which will go on floors in 2017 and star Sanjay Dutt as the main lead.
On March 7, 2016, Sanjay even met up with Rajkumar Hirani, Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Arshad Warsi to discuss the project. After the dinner, Sanjay Dutt, who was in high spirits, told media, “Munna Bhai bane wali hai. Woh toh hone hi wala hai. (Munna Bhai will be made, that’s for certain.)”
