Suryakumar Yadav may not have got a game in this Ranji season — so ironical after that dream start in 2011-12 when he amassed 754 runs — but he has certainly served a reminder to the selectors with tall scores in the Col CK Nayudu Trophy knockout matches.

Yadav was named the skipper of the India U-23 side that will play in the ACC Emerging Teams Cup in Singapore. The squad has Unmukt Chand and Ashok Menaria, both of whom have captained India’s U-19 teams in the World Cup. Fact that Yadav has been preferred over his experienced colleagues suggests that he has done something right.

He played an important role in Mumbai U-25 win in Col CK Nayudu Trophy, slamming three tons and 95 in the knockout stages.

“He has a sharp mind and is a street-smart cricketer. He did well at the NCA camp which worked for him. And he is an India material,” said a source.

Mumbai U-25 coach Vilas Godbole said, “I’ve been telling him that he has the potential to play for the country. I’ve never seen such a confident batsman in many years, but he should not lose focus.” The selectors also announced the India U-19 squad for the tour of Sri Lanka in July -August. Vijay Zol will lead the side.
