Banning of IPL cheer girls also favoured

A crackdown on after-match parties during the Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the solutions to cleanse cricket, according to Board of Control for Cricket in India Working Group chief Jagmohan Dalmiya.

Addressing a press conference after taking over charge from N Srinivasan, Dalmiya said stopping post-match parties could be a definite way out of the mess. “One of the possibilities could be that,” said Dalmiya, when asked how he would go about his task.

After-match parties were officially banned after the third IPL but they continue to take place. Presence of shady elements at these parties had given rise to suspicions that bookies could be using such opportunities to lure players into spot-fixing deals.

Dalmiya is also reportedly in favour of banning cheer girls and even halting IPL for a year to sort out the problems but the president of  Cricket Association of Bengal did not make any comments favouring these moves. “I don’t have any medicine that you get instant result. We don’t have any such magic. We will try our best,” he said.

The 73-year-old former chief of the BCCI made it clear that he had powers to fill vacancies caused by the resignations of board secretary Sanjay Jagdale and treasurer Ajay Shirke.

“They (Jagdale and Shirke) were given 24 hours. Initially, we requested (them) to please carry on and don’t insist on resignation. That was yesterday’s position. As far as Jagdale is concerned, he has no intention to withdraw resignation. That’s the stand so far. I tried to talk to Shirke,  but have not able to communicate with him. I will wait. I am hopeful that a decision will come out. No decision has been taken as yet. I will wait for another 24 hours,” he said.

Dalmiya rubbished talks of he being a proxy of Sinivasan saying that his actions would show the real picture.
