The State government, after dilly-dallying for a couple of months, on Friday appointed retired IPS officer M. Kempaiah as adviser to Home Minister K.J. George. He has been given Minister of State rank.

This comes after a string of crimes, including sexual assault, against women in Bangalore and other parts of the State.

A couple of months ago, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had categorically stated that there was no proposal before the government to appoint Mr. Kempaiah as the adviser. Congress legislators had reportedly submitted a petition to party in-charge of Karnataka Digvijay Singh opposing such an appointment.

Mr. Kempaiah had served as the Additional Director-General of Police. He took voluntary retirement a couple of years ago.
