Woman alleges of sexual assault by Mangalore University associate professor.

Mangalore, October 29:  The Vice -Chancellor, K Byrappa of Mangalore University, has received a complaint by a woman alleging that an associate professor in the commerce department has raped her over the last one year assuring false promises. She has also registered a complaint with the police.

The victim, was studying Kodava language under the university’s Kannada Development Project, alleged that Professor Vedava P, had sexually assaulted in the beginning her at her house at Kaikunje in Bantwal taluk on June 2nd, 2013, when no one was around. When she protested, he threatened her of dire consequences. Later, he promised to marry her and took her to various hotels, beaches and parks where he raped her, the woman in her complaint to the vice-chancellor.

In her complaint she has stated that, “He used to visit my house frequently. I had trusted him but he has broken my trust”.

The vice chancellor has said that, “University has sought explanation from Prof Vedava. The explanation copy has not yet reached the university. The university will take action, based on his explanation”.

The woman has stated that she would stage a silent protest on October 29th, at the Mangalore University campus.

The woman has said, she would keep protesting until she gets justice. The registrar stressed that the university had not granted any permission for the protest in the campus. “We have appealed to the Konaje police to maintain law and order,” he said.

Police Commissioner of the city, R Hithendra said the woman had lodged a complaint at the Konaje police station. As her house comes under the jurisdiction of Bantwal rural police, the case has been transferred to them.
