With the help of my friends I started a campaign on food wastage in Abu Dhabi Indian School. During this campaign we shared some facts with everyone to make them more aware about why we should not waste food and how we can avoid doing so.

We are all very fortunate to be living in a rich country like UAE where we have many things at our convenience. Many of us are leading a very comfortable life. But we tend to be wasteful. Among many things we waste, the biggest wastage is FOOD.

Food is the most basic necessity for any living being to survive. There would be no life without food. Recent survey has shown that one third of food produced globally is either wasted or lost every year. In Abu Dhabi alone 39% of waste produced is organic and most of it is Food waste.

Unlike UAE, a vast majority of people living in underdeveloped countries in Asian and African continents are undernourished due to lack of food. As per World Food Program Organization around 805 million people in the world do not have enough food to lead a healthy active life. In African countries such as Somalia and Ethiopia one in every four people are undernourished. We should also be aware of the fact that one in every 7 people in the world go to bed hungry. Therefore wasting food is offensive.

When food is left to rot and decompose in landfills they produce methane gas which is very harmful to humans, plants and animals alike. They are also a major cause of global warming. Increasing food waste not only leads to pollution but also attract a lot of disease-causing insects which make us sick.

A lot of resources like water, fuel and electricity are used up in the production of food. So we must keep in mind that wasting food also means wasting these precious resources. As responsible citizens we must not let this happen and save it for our future use.

All this can be avoided by making a few simple changes in our habits like serving food only as much as required, planning our menus and shopping list and freezing leftover food. By doing so, we not only save food but also save our hard earned money from being wasted. We can also recycle food by converting them to compost and use them in the garden.

By reducing our FOODPRINT we can reduce humanity’s impact on our planet. Together we can make this happen.
