Mumbai: Gangster Abu Salem was on Wednesday sentenced to life imprisonment by special TADA court for murder of Mumbai-based builder Pradeep Jain in 1995.

Special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam had initially demanded death penalty, which was later converted to a life sentence owing to conditions of the extradition treaty between India and Portugal. Salem’s lawyer Sudeep Pasgola argued that he could not be given the death sentence as it would violate the treaty between the two countries.

“This is a historic decision. Abu Salem was in Dubai when he planned the murder of Pradeep Jain. After that, he kept evading the law. In 2005, he was captured in Portugal. He fought a lot of legal battles to save himself,” said public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam.

“Finally, today the court gave him the appropriate punishment. In the Pradeep Jain murder case, he was awarded the life sentence and 2 lakh fine as punishment,” Nikam said.

Earlier, a special TADA court on Monday convicted deported gangster Abu Salem and two others – Mehndi Hasan and Virendra Jhamb – accused in the 1995 murder case of city-based builder Pradeep Jain. This is the first that Salem has been convicted in a case involving him in India after he was deported in 2005.

“Abu Salem has been convicted under section 302 (murder) 120 B (conspiracy) of the IPC and other relevant sections of TADA,” said Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam.
