Driver tried to negotiate a curve without reducing the speed

At least 20 students, aged between five and 10, were injured on Thursday morning when the school bus by which they were travelling overturned on the Srirangapatna-Bidar Highway in Pandavapura taluk of the district.

The children are students of Nava Bhadraiah Convent, near Bellale.

Nine students — Shreyas (5), Karthik (5), Kiran (6), Bhumika (10), Janani (9), Ganesh (9), Prabhu (9), Srijan (8) and Chandushree (8) — suffered serious injuries.All the children are residents of Anuvinahalli, Manikyanahalli, Hosakote, Halebidu and surrounding villages, the police said.

While the police shifted a few students to a hospital in Mysore, they rushed the others to the government hospital in Pandavapura.

Most of them were discharged by late evening, the police said.

The accident took place when the driver tried to negotiate a curve without reducing the speed.

The bus swerved off the road and overturned, a senior police officer told The Hindu.

The bus driver, who fled after the accident, is absconding, he said.

The police have registered a case of negligent driving against him.

According to police sources, there were more than 30 students in the bus.
