He was assaulted allegedly for videographing their party

A night beat police constable of Cubbon Park police station was allegedly attacked by the supporters of Hungund legislator Vijayanand Kashappanavar early on Wednesday.

According to sources, Mr. Kashappanavar’s birthday party was going on at a pub. On getting the information, constable Kiran Kumar went there and tried to videograph the party.

The police said that Mr. Kumar and another constable had been directed by senior officers to find out if the pub was open beyond the stipulated time.

“When Mr. Kumar went to the pub, he saw that a party was going on. As part of the procedure, he started videographing it. Enraged by this, a few supporters of the MLA attacked him and snatched his mobile phone,” the police said.

Tension prevailed when the unruly mob created a ruckus and argued with the police constables, hurling abuses and attacking them, the police said.

Unable to control the crowd, the constables returned to the police station and filed a complaint against Somashekar and five others.

Based on the complaint, a case has been registered.

While Mr. Kumar has stated that Mr. Kashappanavar, along with three other MLAs, was present at the time of the incident, Police Commissioner Raghavendra H. Auradkar said he did not have any information in this regard.

The Cubbon Park police have summoned the security and staff of the pub and are questioning them.

The police have also asked the management to provide the CCTV footage of the pub.
