Candidates who have undergone a one-year training course in horticulture conducted by the Department of Horticulture, on Thursday, staged a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here seeking their appointment in schools as horticulture teachers.

Members of the State Horticulture Trainers’ Association, who staged the protest, demanded that they be appointed in schools, including aided educational institutions. The appointment to the posts of horticulture teachers was discontinued from 1996. The State has as many as 8,000 people who have completed the course, the association said.

Association president Mooganahundu Yogesh said in a release that the appointment of horticulture trainers as horticulture teachers would facilitate garden development in schools. The schools can grow vegetables, which can be used for midday meals, he said.

Mr. Yogesh said the course is being taught in 12 centres, including Krishnaraja Sagar, in the State and there is a demand for the course. He said a memorandum was submitted to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah some time ago, urging him to take steps for their appointment.
