The city police claimed to have solved the murder of Sourabh Rastogi (35), who was found dead in his eighth floor flat in Sun City apartments on Sunday, with the arrest of his colleague R Chengappa. According to a senior police officer, investigations so far have revealed that Chengappa allegedly carried out the murder “purely for Ankita Rastogi”. He said that the police are investigating if she had any role in the crime.

Police zeroed in on Chengappa after analysing CCTV footage and visitors’ log book. They have also detained Rastogi’s wife for questioning.

According to the police, Sourabh, Ankita and the Chengappa worked for the same multinational company. The suspect was close to the Rastogis and used to visit their house often. Over a period of time, he became attracted towards Ankita and visited their house even when Sourabh was away on overseas assignments; an officer said adding that the nature of their relationship is yet to be ascertained. Ankita had recently quit her job and police are investigating if it was on account of Chengappa. When it became evident that he may not be able to get Ankita, the suspect allegedly decided to eliminate Sourabh, the officer said. “The suspect was aware that Ankita was away in Pune and Sourabh was alone in the house. He bought a dagger and went to meet Sourabh,” he said. After some casual conversation, the suspect allegedly attacked Sourabh who tried to defend himself, but was overpowered.

“The suspect has confessed to the crime, but we are yet to ascertain whether Ankita was part of the conspiracy,” a senior police official said.
