Noted Carnatic vocalist Vidyabhushana on Saturday said his mission was to popularise Haridasa Sahitya, the Kannada devotional literature promoted by saints from Bhakti movement.

Mr. Vidyabhushana is known for his renderings of the Daasara Padagalu.

Speaking at the ‘Maneyangaladalli Maatukate’, a monthly programme organised by the Department of Kannada and Culture, Mr. Vidyabhushana dubbed the Daasara Padagalu as “spiritual literature.”

“Simplistic Carnatic music style is well-suited for rendering the compositions of Purandaradasa, Kanakadasa and others and it is not proper to compose them in light music form”, he said.

Recalling the contributions of Dasa literature to Kannada, he said that Dasas, including Kanaka and Purandara, had enriched Kannada through their compositions.

He attributes his popularity as a vocalist to the clarity in pronunciation and in capturing the emotional tone of the Daasara Padagalu. “Though I sing various Carnatic ragas, people want me to render only the Daasasra Padagalu,” he said.

Mr. Vidyabhushana owes his success to his father Govindacharya and renowned Carnatic music exponents like R.K. Srikantan and T.V. Gopalakrishnan, who, he says, have helped fine-tune his music.
