The Transport Department has suspended 2,754 driving licences for traffic violations in 2013-14, of which 374 were drunken driving cases.

The Bangalore city traffic police had seized licenses of offenders and submitted them to the Transport Department.

The traffic police submitted 831 licences of motorists caught for drunken driving to the department between April 1, 2013 and March 24, 2014. Of these, 374 were suspended and the department has issued notices for the remaining offenders.

According to the figures given by the Transport Department, the police had sought suspension of 3,466 licences in 2013-14 for violations such as the use of mobile phone while riding/driving, not using seat belt and not riding with helmet among others. While 2,380 licences have been suspended, the remaining have been served with notices.

In a bid to intensify their efforts on traffic violators, the traffic police had started a drive from April 1 wherein even licences of first-time offenders are being recommended for suspension. These offences include drunken driving, reckless driving, riding on footpaths, and usage of mobile phone while driving.
