Veteran BJP leader L K Advani on Wednesday chose to sidestep issues plaguing Karnataka and talked at length on the JPC’s draft report on the 2G scam, besides attacking the Congress, while campaigning for the Assembly elections in the State.

Instead of instilling confidence in the electorate and wooing voters, Advani chose to defend former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, who has reportedly found a mention in the JPC’s draft report on the controversial spectrum allocation.

Campaigning for Anand Mamani, the BJP candidate in the Savadatti-Yallamma Assembly constituency here, Advani said Vajpayee “is the tallest leader of the party.” He insisted that no one has succeeded in maligning Vajpayee till date. “The BJP will not tolerate allegations against Vajpayee, Jaswant Singh and Arun Shourie,” he said.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, his law minister and others are facing several charges of corruption. But leaked portions of the JPC report have given  the prime minister a clean chit, Advani said. The report will come up in Parliament on Thursday and the party will take it head on.

Advani said: “Since Independence, I have seen governments led by Jawaharlal Nehru to Singh and have been part of two governments led by Morarji Desai and Vajpayee. Both prime ministers under whom I served did not face any charges of corruption and had set morals for others to follow. The BJP has been following the morals of Vajpayee.”
