Bangalore: Home Minister K J George on Saturday accused the BJP of politicising the issue of the government paying compensation to the kin of Kabeer, who was shot dead by the Anti-Naxal Force mistaking him for a Maoist at the Thanikodu forest checkpost in Sringeri recently.

Replying to queries from reporters, George said the ANF had admitted that Kabeer was mistakenly killed. Further investigation had also confirmed that Kabeer had never been involved in Naxal activities. “Irrespective whether he had any other cases against him, Kabeer is innocent as he was not a Maoist,” George said, supporting the government’s move to pay a Rs 10-lakh compensation to Kabeer’s family.

Regarding a murder case being filed against Anti-Naxal Force officer Naveen Naik, who had shot dead Kabeer, the minister said the government had no role in the matter and the case had been booked by the investigation agency.

The BJP had accused the Congress of indulging in “vote bank politics” by portraying Kabeer as innocent. The BJP claimed that Kabeer was illegally transporting cattle and that it was a crime.

George said there had been no communal clashes in the State after the Congress government had taken over the reins of the government. The Election Commission had allowed the Lok Sabha polls to be conducted in a single phase and it reflected the sound law and order situation in the State, he said.

Replying to a query, George said the combing operations had not been stopped in the Naxal-affected areas in the State.
