Murder convict hangs himself in Hindalga jail

Belgaum: A 29-year-old murder convict committed suicide at Central Prison, Hindalga by hanging himself from the ceiling of the toilet inside the prison barracks here on Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as Muniyappa Huchaiah, a native of Gubbi in Tumkur district. According to sources, Muniyappa, who was serving life term in connection with a murder case, hanged himself with a torn piece of bedsheet inside a toilet.

The incident occurred at around 11.30 am when other prisoners were having lunch. When the prisoners returned to their barracks, they found the bedsheet torn and Muniyappa hanging from the ceiling, police said.

According to police, prison officials and inmates made efforts to revive him and rushed him to the hospital inside the prison. He was later shifted to a district hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

Muniyappa was lodged in the Central Prison in Hindalga in November 2013 after a court found him guilty of murder and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
Belgaum Rural police have registered a case.
