3BGCTY4-2A meeting to finalise the recruitment of 4,000 pourakarmikas in the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and framing the guidelines for the same will be held on Friday, said city Mayor B.S. Sathyanarayana.

He made the announcement after Subhashnagar councillor T. Mallesh and few other councillors staged a protest in the well of the BBMP council on Wednesday against the delay in recruitment. The councillors came prepared for an indefinite strike with soap, pillow, bedspread and tooth brush and threatened to continue with the protest until recruitments were made.

Earlier, Mr. Mallesh said the BBMP had not recruited pourakarmikas after 1983. Demanding to know the reasons for the delay, he alleged that it was because of the garbage mafia. Other Congress councillors also joined him and demanded immediate recruitments.

Commissioner M. Lakshminarayan said as per the government order, of the 4,000 posts, 600 should be given to those belonging to Scheduled Castes, 120 to those from Scheduled Tribes and the remaining to those from other reserved categories. The government order also stated that while educational qualification was not required, candidates should be physically fit, know Kannada and be a domicile for at least 10 years.

He said the BBMP was considering regularising the services of 4,000 of the 18,000 contract pourakarmikas. “To finalise the recruitment, as directed by the Urban Development Department, the BBMP has constituted a committee. The committee will frame guidelines for the recruitment,” he added.
