Bangalore, November 30:  Choosing their target appears to have become easier for ATM thieves now. An unguarded ATM kiosk belonging to HDFC Bank in Kothanur, which was shut down by the police in the recent crackdown against kiosks without guards, was broken into early on Friday in an attempted theft.

The incident came to light when a few passersby noticed the damaged shutter of the kiosk and informed the police.

The Kothanur police rushed to the spot and recovered the CCTV camera images, which showed a man, possibly aged around 25 to 30, breaking open the shutter of the ATM on K. Narayanapura Main Road before attempting to open the ATM machine with a screwdriver.

“After 20 minutes of futile effort, the suspect went away drawing down the damaged shutters,” a police officer said.

The police said that the CCTV images were not clear due to bad light. “The lights of the kiosks were switched off and moreover the accused was wearing a woollen cap, which is making us difficult to identify him,” an official of Kothanur police said.

The CCTV camera images have been sent to the forensic science laboratory to get a clearer picture of the miscreant.

Meanwhile, the fingerprints have been recorded and sent to crime record bureau to ascertain his identity, the police added.
