Bidar: The district principal sessions court here, on Tuesday, sentenced a 32-year-old man to death and imposed fine on him in a serial murder case. Two others were acquitted due to lack of evidence.
Special police teams constituted to probe the case apprehended the accused on October 31, 2011, suspecting their involvement in the serial murder case of women reported in different places of Humnabad taluk in the district.
If the convict is unable to pay the fine, he shall have to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of another two years.
Shashikala Urankar, the district principal sessions judge, held Mohammed Sultan guilty under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). He has also been held guilty under two other Sections, 394 and 201, of the IPC.
Under Section 394, he has been sentenced to a rigorous jail term of six years and a fine of Rs 10,000 has been imposed on him. If he is unable to pay the fine, he will have to serve an additional term of one year.
Under Section 201, Sultan has been sentenced to a rigorous imprisonment of three years and a fine of Rs 10,000 has been imposed on him. All the above sentences shall run consecutively, the judgment reads.
However, the judge acquitted two other accused in the case – Mohammed Kaleem and Sayyed Tayab – due to lack of evidence against them.
The police investigated the case of a woman’s murder registered under Mannakheli police station limits and filed a charge sheet in January 2012. Based on evidence submitted before the court and argument presented by government advocate Ramachandra Lamani, the court held Sultan guilty and acquitted the others.
