BANGALORE: Two teenagers from Jakkarayanakere, close to Mantri Mall, Sampige Road, drowned in a pond at Bangalore Palace Grounds, Bellary Road on Sunday.

V Ramesh, 14, and V Maniratnam, 17, left home around 11.30am with eight friends for a walk in Palace Grounds. Ramesh and Maniratnam entered the pond thinking there wasn’t much water in it but drowned in the rain water which had collected there even as the others looked on.

Both Ramesh, a Class VIII student, and Maniratnam, a school dropout, were neighbours and didn’t know swimming.

Alerted by the other boys, Ramesh’s father Venkataram and Maniratnam’s father Venkataramanaiah reported the incident to High Grounds police station on Monday morning. “Our sons were stuck in muddy water and drowned,” the parents said.

Fire & Emergency Services officials tried to locate the bodies till Monday evening before calling off the search. “We’ll resume the operation at daybreak Tuesday,” a fire brigade officer added. A police officer said the bodies may be stuck in the silt.
