Bangalore, Oct 27, 2013, DHNS: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday announced that an expert committee will be formed to make suitable amendments to the Sarojini Mahishi report on providing jobs to Kannadigas in government and private sector.
Siddaramaiah made the announcement at a conference of labourers organised by the Kannada Development Authority (KDA) at the Freedom Park here, where the KDA chairperson ‘Mukhyamatri’ Chandru submitted a list of 15 recommendations to be included in the Sarojini Mahishi report.
The KDA has made these recommendations and sought their inclusion in the Sarojini Mahishi report to make sure that Kannada-speaking population gets its due in terms of employment and other facilities. The State government had set up KDA to oversee the implementation of the accepted recommendations of the Sarojini Mahishi report, which was submitted in 1986.
‘Report not effective’
Chandru said, “The Mahishi report which was formulated in 1986 does not hold good for the current situation. People from the State are losing out on various opportunities in the field of Information Technology (IT) and in other sectors. We have submitted our recommendation and it is the duty of the government to safeguard the interests of the Kannadigas. It is not necessary to change the entire Mahishi report but certain changes are a must and should be done at the earliest.”
One of the important recommendations which was made by KDA is that advertisements of both government and private sector jobs should be compulsorily published in vernacular newspapers. Celebration of Kannada Rajayotsava in private companies, option to write civil services and banking exams in local languages and reservation in jobs for Kannadigas are among the other recommendations.
Kannada education
Addressing the conference, Siddaramaiah said: “We should create an environment such that others learn to speak Kannada instead of we conversing with them in their language. When we go to other states, people do not like to converse in other dialects other than their own. But, here it is totally different. No matter what language they talk at home, Kannada should be compulsorily made part of their education.”
The chief minister said the State government will take up the issue of providing more jobs to local people during the meeting of the National Development Council.
Secretary of KDA, Muralidhar, said, “Kannada-speaking people who are settled in other countries have shown their support for this cause (changes to the Mahishi report) through online and more than one lakh signatures have been collected to support the cause.”
