BELGAUM, October 17:  In a recent development, Amit — son of senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader from the district and Rajya Sabha member Prabhakar Kore — will plunge into politics by joining the Congress, and not his father’s party.

Belgaum District Congress Committee president Laxmi R. Hebbalkar confirmed the development and said Mr. Amit will join the party on Thursday. He will apply for primary membership of the party by paying a fee of Rs. 5. There will not be an official ceremony to mark his entry, but it will be an official formality, she said. Mr. Amit also confirmed this. However, on a query on whether Mr. Amit would be the Congress candidate from Chikkodi Parliamentary Constituency for the Lok Sabha elections, which is at present held by strongman Ramesh V. Katti of the BJP, brother of the former Minister Umesh V. Katti, Ms. Hebbalkar said this was a decision that the party high command would take.

Mr. Amit (34) is an engineering graduate (Mechanical Engineering) and also holds a MBA degree. He is a member of the Board of Management of the KLE Society, headed by Mr. Kore. A native of Ankli village of Chikkodi taluk, he is known to be unpretentious and tech-savvy.

His son’s decision to join the Congress has raised doubts on whether Mr. Kore may rejoin the Congress. He had quit the Congress more than five years ago to grab a BJP ticket to the Rajya Sabha.
