MADIKERI: In a freak accident, a woman was killed when her daughter’s gun went off accidentally in Shrimangala, south Kodagu, on Thursday.

Appumanianda Rani Karumbaiah, 60, wife of late SI Appumaniyanda Karumbaiah, succumbed to injuries in a hospital, police said.

Rani, who used to live in Mysore, came to Shrimangala a few days ago to stay with her 34-year-old daughter Suma Sanju and son-in-law. Their neighbour Machangada Machaiah had passed away earlier in the day, and his family wanted to borrow Suma’s gun for the funeral. As per tradition, the Kodavas fire a shot in the air at funerals.

When Suma was cleaning the double-barrelled gun, it went off accidentally injuring her in the right hand and then piercing her mother in the stomach who was watching Suma clean the gun. Suma wasn’t aware that the gun was loaded, police said. A case of accidental death has been registered. Suma has been admitted to a Mysore hospital with minor injuries.

Rani was rushed to a hospital and succumbed to her wound without responding to treatment, said hospital sources. Dr. Jayakuamar conducted the postmortem. The body was taken to Mysore for the last rites. The injured Suma was shifted to Mysore for treatment. Superintendent of police Anucheth MN visited the spot said that a case of accidental death has been registered.
