Bangalore, July 27, 2013, DHNS:
Gangarajaiah, 54, had little idea he would be suspended and slapped with a corruption case when he accepted Rs 200 as bribe on Thursday evening.
Gangarajaiah, an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) with the Nandini Layout police station, was caught red-handed by the Lokayukta police, while receiving the money a motorist was paying him to get his bike keys back.
However, according to well-placed sources in the Lokayukta, it was not Gangarajaiah who had caught the motorist and demanded money, but he is facing action as he was caught red-handed while receiving the bribe.
“The motorist was caught for riding without a helmet by G Ravi, constable in the same police station. Ravi had confiscated the bike keys and demanded bribe from the motorist to return the same,” a source said.
He had asked Ramachandra, a student of R C College, for the bribe on July 23 after having found him riding without a helmet. When Ramachandra refused to pay, he confiscated the keys and seized the bike, after registering a petty case.
Despite Ramachandra’s requests the following day, Ravi refused to return the keys till he got Rs 200 as bribe. Angered by this, the student complained to the Lokayukta police, who laid a trap.
When Ramachandra went to the police station with the Lokayukta police on Thursday, he found that Ravi was not in the station.
On calling him on his mobile phone, he instructed Ramachandra to pay Rs 200 to Gangarajaiah and take his bike. “Gangarajaiah was caught receiving the bribe,” the source said, adding that he had now obtained bail.
