BANGALORE: A 14-year-old girl was sexually assaulted for six months, allegedly by her mother’s colleague, in a Bangalore suburb. She is now in an advanced stage of pregnancy.

Doctors on Wednesday told police that the pregnancy cannot be terminated as the girl, Ramya (name changed), doesn’t have “enough physical stamina” to withstand the medical procedure.

Police arrested 23-yearold Nagendra Hanumanthappa , a BBMP garbage truck driver, from Kengeri’s Sriram Layout in the morning and slapped rape and threatto-kill charges against him. Ramya has been shifted to Nimhans for counselling.

Nagendra rented out a house in the area 18 months ago and became close to Ramya’s family. The victim is the only daughter of Jayanthi (name changed), a sweeper in the BBMP. Her father is an alcoholic . “Since his wife was staying in Pavagada, Tumkur district, I sometimes used to share food with Nagendra. My colleagues and I would travel in his lorry on sweeping errands ,” Jayanthi said.

Nagendra and Ramya, a class IX student in a nearby school, became friends. According to Jayanthi, Nagendra would buy her chocolates, biscuits and pani puri near the Kengeri railway station. He would often drop her to school, Jayanthi said, adding he would imitate south Indian film heroes to reaffirm the girl’s friendship. Jayanthi’s world came crashing down when Ramya complained of giddiness and vomited several times last week.

Raped class X student is a mom now

A dolescent pregnancy, a burning issue in the West, is a cause of concern in Bangalore too. Incidentally, Thursday is World Population Day; and the theme this year is adolescent pregnancy. A class X student became pregnant after a mechanic-neighbour allegedly raped her in her Sriramapura residence in 2012. The incident came to light when the girl became pregnant. The school slammed its door on the girl. Though she got a high court order to return to school, she discontinued her education after giving birth to a baby girl, police sources said.

Accused threatened to kill victim

Thinking it could be viral fever, she took Ramya to a clinic which referred the girl to a hospital. “Doctors broke the shocking news that my daughter was five months’ pregnant,” she said.

When confronted, Ramya confided in Jayanthi that Nagendra was sexually assaulting her for six months and he had threatened to kill the girl if revealed it to anyone. The rape accused fled from the area when Jayanthi took him head-on . Following a complaint by Jayanthi on Monday, Kengeri police tracked Nagendra down to a hideout in Dobbespet, near Nelamangala, and arrested him immediately. Nagendra’s wife and other family members landed in Sriram Layout and accused Jayanthi of having an affair with Nagendra.
