Mysore, June 28;The Kabini reservoir is almost full with the water-level reaching 2,280 ft on Thursday as against the full reservoir level of 2,284 ft. The authorities have started releasing water at the rate of 25,000 cusecs.
As a result, the Bidarahalli bridge downstream of the Kabini dam has been submerged. The 16-pillared mantap called Hadinaru kalu Mantap at the Snana Ghatta (bathing point for devotees) of Kapila River in Nanjangud town has been partially submerged.
Thanks to copious rainfall in Wayanad in Kerala, the catchment area of the dam, the inflow has increased so also the outflow. The authorities expect a steady increase in the inflow in the coming days.
Boost to tourism
With copious rainfall in the catchment areas of the Kabini reservoir after two years of drought, people in the region are glad the reservoir is almost full. In fact, people from surrounding areas went to watch the breathtaking sight of water gushing out of the crest gates of the dam. A resident of H.D. Kote, a town near Kabini dam site, said that people come to watch the breathtaking sight when outflow from the Kabini dam increases. “It is a visual treat. It boosts tourism,” he said.
Bagina to be offered
Farmers of the Kabini command area will offer ‘Bagina’ at Kabini reservoir in H.D. Kote taluk of Mysore district at 11 a.m. on June 30 .
Led by the State Sugarcane Growers’ Association president Kurubur Shanthkumar, farmers will offer the ‘Bagina’ to Kapila river and pray for good harvest this season.
Association secretary Attahalli Devaraj, in a press release, urged farmers to participate in the event in large numbers. He requested the authorities concerned to take steps to release water to the canals.
