Udupi: Biju Thomas, the main suspect in the confiscation of huge cache of explosives in Karkala last month, was arrested in Gurgaon near Delhi on Sunday morning.

He would be brought to Udupi on Tuesday, Karkala ASP Annamalai told Deccan Herald, but did not rule out the terror angle and said that a clear picture would emerge only after the suspect was interrogated.

In a series of raids on places in and around Karkala like Nakre, Koti-Chennaya Theme Park, Hebri, Tellar, Durg, Kuntady and Kalya in the last week of March, police had seized a huge cache of explosives, including 95 tones of ammonium nitrate, 800 gelatine sticks, 1.20 lakh detonators and 23,000 metres of safety fuse wire.

The explosives were estimated to be valued at about Rs two crore.

While Thomas absconded after the raid on his rubber plantation at Nakre on March 25, the second main suspect, Veeramaniswami, was caught on April 3. He is now out on bail.
Many others picked up at the time were let off under Section 169 of the CrPC (release of accused when evidence is deficient) after their statements were recorded, the ASP said.

Later, to apprehend Thomas, a three-member team was formed under Karkala Town SI Kabalraj. The team went to Rajasthan after receiving a tip-off. Thereafter, it was led to Delhi and finally to Gurgaon where Thomas was apprehended.
