Mangalore, Feb 27: The Mangalore city has been brightened up for the Great Night of Shiva, popularly known as Maha Shivaratri.
On this great night thousands of Devotees thronged Shiva temples across the state to pay homage and pray for happiness, peace and prosperity on the auspicious occasion of Shivaratri today. Unlike other Hindu festivals, Mahashivaratri is being observed with profound silence, fasting and night-long vigil with the chanting of Bhajans.
The festival will be observed with traditional fervour in temples including Sri Kshetra Kadri and Sri Kshetra Gokarnanateshwara, Pandeshwar Mahalingeshwara Temple, Urwa Panchalingeshwara Temple, Kavoor Panchalingeshwara Temple, Suratkal Idya Sri Mahalingeshwara Temple, Panambur Sri Nandaneshwar Temple and other temple.
Devotees worship Shivalinga and offer bilva leaves. According to their belief it is the symbolical union of individual soul with the supreme soul.
