Udupi; Sept 27: Udupi police could able to apprehend five aids of underworld don Bannanje Raja, on September 26, Thursday morning, who used to threaten to kill businessmen, including the one they made recently to young business man and extort the money from them.
The arrested were identified as Mohammed Maksood Moodbidri, Mohammed Haneef alias Haneef Karkala, Sachin Poojary Ambagilu, Sayyed Bhuran Kaup and Shamshuddin Hanumanth Nagar.
Police officials under the leadership of inspector Maruthi G Nayak traced their car when they were loading lethal weapons and waylaided it and the arrest was made near Ashirvad Talkies, Santhekatte Puttur.
The Zen car along with lethal weapons and chilli powder has been seized by the police.
The arrested were produced in court and sent to judicial custody till October 7.
CPI Marithi G Nayak,PSI Amanulla,Ravichandra,Sudesh Shetty,Sudheer,Thomson,Umesh,Khader,Krishna Prasad,Nagesh,driver Mahabaleshwar and Santhosh were part of the operation.
During the investigation, it is learnt that the arrested were aids of underworld don Bannanje Raja, Doddannaguddeya Siraj Hassan and Sameer of Hanumanth Nagar.
It was revealed that the arrested persons used to identify the businessmen and make them threatening call, demanding money in lacs and if the business men deny paying, the accused would threaten to kill them. Sometimes, the aids used to pass the contact number to underworld don, who in turn call the businessmen from abroad and threaten them with dire consequences, said police sources
