Manipal rape case: Cops release suspect’s sketch; Appeal to students – organisations to withdraw agitation

Udupi, Jun 24: Four days after the alleged abduction and gang-rape of a 4th year Medical  student in ManipalI G (Pradhap Reddy) released the sketch of one of the three persons accused in the Manipal gang-rape case. The victim said to confirm the sketch. Doctors are interacting with the girl directly due to her health condition. Promising an early breakthrough, Reddy refused to say whether the sketch is that of the autorickshaw driver or one of the other two men.

The sketch has been distributed among the volunteers’ citizens and also members of auto-rickshaw driver union. The section 376(D) mentions (Sexual assault by gang)charged against the culprit.

Police have obtained CCTV footage from private complexes in the vicinity from where the student was abducted. One of the images has the autorickshaw used by the three culprits, but its registration number can’t be seen because the picture is of low resolution.

Including the 8 teams deputed earlier, 200 policemen are working at this case, and so far 17 drivers were included in interrogation, the footage in the CCTV reveals the identity of the auto-rickshaw in a dusky picture. he added.

The officials are waiting for the girl to recover completely before taking her version, he said.

The accused talked to the girl in Hindi, and interacted among themselves in a language which she coul not understate and Reddy said that maybe it is Tulu, Beary or Konkani,

He also clarified that police have learnt that one of the three men drove the student back to her apartment after the crime. but refused to elaborate.

The girl is said to be injured  because she tried to escape from the drivers and jumped out of the auto but they carried her again. The sketches of the other two accused are expected to be released soon he added.

He appealed the political parties, students’ organization not to venture protest and agitation futher
