Mangalore, Oct 23: Akshatha Bola and Vijaykanchan who emerged as Powerlifting champions at World Bench Press and Power Lifting championship held at Las Vegas, USA, winning two gold medals each, were extended a warm welcome by a huge crowd at Mangalore International Airport On Thursday October 23rd.
Crowd led by Mayor of Mangalore Mahabala Marla, and fans from various Taluks thronged the airport with flower bouquet and garlands to welcome the duo.
Vijay kanchan who won two gold medals in Bench Press and Dread Lift in 107 KG categories said, “The state government of Karnataka heeds less to the demands of powerlifters unlike other states of the nation. Vijay is head constable from Mulky. He had won many gold medals earlier in the power lifting events organised at Philippines, Kazakhstan and Japan. Vijay expressed his satisfaction with the facilitation he enjoyed from the police department in his venture.
Speaking to the media he said, that the lifters were waiting for the support and they have written to the Karnataka Sports Authority for the same. Power Lifting assumes less significance in the state of Karnataka, he added.
Due to the cold weather at America, Akshatha’s voice was mute. She said it took nearly four days to adjust with the climatic conditions even then she could do her best in world level.
She won two gold medals in the category of 47 KG. She hails from Bola, in Karkala.
Akshatha, is practicing Power Lifting since 8 years. She got her post graduation from Alva’s college recently.
The winners were taken in a cavalcade, from Airport accompanied by the crowd in a decorated open jeep.
