A six-year-old girl died after a shoal of piranhas devoured the flesh from her legs when she fell into the water from her grandmother’s canoe in Brazil, according to the Daily Mail.

The tragedy struck during a family holiday when the girl fell into the water in Rio Maicuru in Monte Alegre.

As reported in Brazilian local paper Ariquemes Agora, the little girl, who has been identified as Adrila Muniz, was accompanied with four other children and her grandmother when their canoe capsized during a thunderstorm in Brazil.

Her grandmother was quoted by local media as saying that she tried to hold onto her, but with all the other children around Adrila slipped out of her grasp.
