Guwahati: National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) chairman Ranjan Daimary, the prime accused in the October 30, 2008 serial blasts, was granted bail by Kamrup District and Sessions court. But the families of the victims are upset with the judgement. They feel that the decision to grant bail is unjust to the families and friends of the people who died in the nine blasts that rocked Assam.
Purnima Saikia lost her daughter Dipamoni in the serial blasts. She was visibly disappointed with the grant of bail to Daimary and said that, “This is not okay. But it doesn’t matter what I say. It has to be through the due process of law. My only thoughts are with the families that lost their sons and daughters.”
Daimary has already been granted bail in nine cases. While the CBI opposed the previous bails, they chose to not oppose it this time, with the hope of furthering the ongoing peace talks with militant outfit NDFB. The move to not oppose Daimary’s bail was to step up the peace process. But refuting any such claims, CBI Counsel Manas Saraniya said, “It is not a question of supporting or opposing the bail plea. It is purely a part of the judicial procedure.”

The nine blasts that rocked Assam on October 20, 2008, killed over 100 people.
Emboldened by the grant of bail, Daimary’s Lawyer Sanjeeb K Lahkar was quoted as saying, “There are five more cases. We are expecting that he will get bail from the honourable court. Then I think he will proceed for peace talks as per the government’s initiative. An interlocutor is coming. He has met him 14 times in jail.”
Over 100 people were killed in the October 30, 2008 serial blasts. With the stage being set up for the main accused to join peace talks with the government, the judgement seems to hold little meaning for the families of the affected.
