New Delhi: A small paramilitary plane carrying around 10 people crashed just outside the main airport in India’s capital on Tuesday, killing at least one person, an official said.

The plane crashed after takeoff into a small body of water just outside a boundary wall at the airport, said A.K. Sharma, director of Delhi Fire Services, adding that part of the plane was submerged under water.

One body has been recovered so far and the status of the other people aboard the plane is unclear, he said.

The cause of the crash or the make of the aircraft were not immediately clear. At least 15 fire engines and scores of police officials were at the crash site, Sharma said.

The plane, belonging to India’s Border Security Force, was heading from New Delhi to the eastern city of Ranchi.
