Chennai is flooded, storm may move to Andhra Pradesh

Chennai: The Chennai Corporation deployed about 30 boats to rescue stranded residents from areas which had submerged due to the three days of rainfall. The local body said it had utilised 30 boats to rescue people in the southern zones like Perungudi, Jeppiar Nagar in Sholinganallur and Kalki Nagar, Tansi Nagar and Ram Nagar.

The North-East monsoon pounding the northern coastal districts has so far claimed 71 lives. The weather office forecast heavy downpour in the next three days in the state, Puducherry and coastal Andhra Pradesh.

The well-marked low pressure over Southwest Bay of Bengal off Tamil Nadu is likely to move north-westwards towards north Tamil Nadu coast and could concentrate into a depression, the weather office said.

Nellore has already recorded 12.5 cm of rain in the last 24 hours. The rains led to breaches in 92 irrigation. Late reports said two people were killed in Nellore and six in Chittoor.
