Mumbai: Punjabi singer Dharampreet allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan on June 7.
According to reports, the singer who is popular in Punjab’s Malwa region, was suffering from depression. The singer known for his sad songs, went on to make 26 music albums, most of them were huge hits among the listeners.
He hailed from Bilaspur village and lived with his family in Bharat Nagar, Bhatinda. His wife and son had been away to her parents’ house for summer vacations, when the incident occurred.
Dharampreet’s mother asked neighbours to break open the door when he didn’t answer knocks at his door. Once they broke in, he was found hanging from the ceiling fan. An FIR under section 174 of the IPC has been lodged and the body was handed over to the family after post-mortem.
Reports suggest that the singer was going through a rough patch and was battling depression for quite some time. While this could have been a reason for Dharampreet to take the drastic step, no suicide note has been found yet by the investigating team.
He started off his career in 1993, had very little work for the past year and a half. It came as shocking news as only about 6 months ago, his video album came out and he was in high spirits.
