New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday sent a notice to senior BJP leaders, including Lal Krishna Advani, Uma Bharti, Murli Manohar Joshi and Kalyan Singh on a plea seeking conspiracy charges against them in the 1992 Babri Mosque demolition case.

The top court has given four weeks time for the BJP leaders to respond. The petitioner, Haji Mehboob Ahmed wants conspiracy charges filed against the BJP leaders.

In 2010, the Allahabad High Court verdict had acquitted the leaders of criminal conspiracy.

A bench of Chief Justice HL Dattu and Justice Arun Mishra has also given a three-week notice to the CBI to explain the delay in appealing against the HC order.

The Babri Mosque was demolished on December 6, 1992. An unruly mob had scaled the dome of mosque with hammers, hooks levelled off the entire mosque in few hours. Hindu fanatics reportedly destroyed numerous other mosques within the town as well.

The bone of contention revolved around access to a site that was traditionally regarded by the Hindus as the birthplace of Lord Ram and whether a previous Hindu temple was demolished to create the mosque. The history and location of the Babri Mosque at the site resulted in the long-standing Ayodhya dispute.
