Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Nirbhaya’s parents on Tuesday and assured them that his government was doing its utmost for safety and security of women.
As per reports, he also condoled the loss of their daughter.
At the same time he appreciated the efforts of Nirbhaya’s mother, who runs the Nirbhaya Jyoti Trust for welfare of women.
Later talking to the media, Nirbhaya’s father said that they had given a letter to the PM demanding amendment in juvenile act and death sentence for culprits.
“The PM said matter is under Court’s jurisdiction, government cannot interfere but assured us about security of women,” he added, as per ANI.
Nirbhaya’s Mother reiterated that they “had a discussion on issue of security of women” and PM Modi assured them that situation would soon become better.
Nirbhaya, a 23-year old para-medical student, was brutally gang-raped two years ago in the national capital in a moving bus by six men, including a juvenile, on December 16, 2012.
She was travelling with a male friend from a South Delhi mall in the bus.
She later succumbed to her injuries in Singapore where she was airlifted for treatment.
The savage gang-rape had outraged the whole nation with protests being held in cities across India. People’s anger forced the then UPA government to come with a new anti-rape law.
The victim was ‘Nirbhaya’ or ‘Fearless’ by the media.
As the nation observed the second death anniversary of Nirbhaya this year, her mother demanded social change and along urged for a stronger implementation of juvenile laws.
She had also appealed to the PM to start something similar to the ‘Swacch Bharat Abhiyan’ in order to make the nation crime free.
While one of the accused in the case committed suicide in jail, the rest four adults were awarded them death penalty on September 13, 2013. The Delhi High Court upheld penalty in March 2014.
As of now the case is in the Supreme Court after the convicts appealed against the judgement.
