Kolkata, Fri May 17: A 10-year-old boy died today from injuries he allegedly received after being beaten up by his teacher. The incident happened at a primary education centre at Nirdeshkhali in Basanti, South 24-Parganas.
On May 14, Class III student Biplab Joardar alias Bapi was playing with his friends at the classroom of the education centre. His mother, Sunita Joardar, said the assistant teacher of the class, Champa Mondal, slapped him and then hit him with a book. “She did not stop there and banged Biplab’s head against the wall several times, causing severe injuries,” Sunita said, adding that Biplab did not tell her about it.
“It was only when he had a severe headache that my younger son, seven-year-old Nabakishore, who is a Class I student of the same school, told me about the incident,” she said. The next day, Sunita went to see the assistant teacher who told Sunita that her son was misbehaving in the class which is why she had hit him.
As Biplab’s condition deteriorated on May 16, he was rushed to government hospital in Canning around midnight. From there he was referred to Chittaranjan Hospital in Kolkata. A CT scan was done there and Biplab’s family members were told that his brain had been affected.
“Knowing SSKM was better equipped to handle these cases, Biplab was shifted there at 3 am. At 5.10 am Friday, he passed away,” Sunita said.
Locals protested outside the school and after a complaint was filed at Basanti Police Station against the assistant teacher, she was arrested. Biplab’s father, a daily wage earner, rushed home after he heard the news. “I don’t want any money, any compensation, I want justice. The teacher should be punished,” he told The Indian Express over the phone.
Education Minister Bratya Basu strongly condemned the incident. “It is a shameful incident and strong action would be taken against the offending teacher,” he said.
